Websites for the People
Hi, I’m Vitaly Kolesnik.
I design and build websites, web applications, and digital products. During the last twenty years I’ve worked with organizations ranging from small local businesses to international corporations.
Recently I’ve been building Jede, a monitoring service that tells website owners when something stops working.
What I Do
I care not only whether a page loads and looks good, but whether a person can actually accomplish what they came to do: buy something, submit a form, make a reservation, find the right information or contact the organization behind the website.
I built my first business website in 2000, began working with WordPress-powered websites in 2004, and have worked as a React JS frontend developer for a decade.
I was originally trained as a programmer and later as a designer. That allows me to connect areas that are often divided among several suppliers: visual design, user experience, frontend development, WordPress, integrations, deployment and ongoing maintenance.
My principal areas of work include:
- corporate and content websites
- advanced WordPress development
- WordPress integrations with external systems and APIs
- WooCommerce and online sales
- custom frontends built with React
- redesign and repair of existing websites
- animation and interactive elements
- automation, AI integrations
- deployment, server administration, and technical maintenance
My regular technologies include WordPress, WooCommerce, PHP, ACF, WordPress REST API, React, Vite, JavaScript, SCSS, Node.js, Git, Nginx, and Linux VPS infrastructure.
However complex or innovative the technology may be, I do not consider it the outcome of my work. The outcome must be a website that regular people easily understand, that reliably fulfils its purpose and that can evolve.
I am based in the Czech Republic and work remotely.
Testing Real User Journeys
I am currently developing Jede, a continuous monitoring system for Czech websites. Conventional technical checks usually verify server availability, speed or isolated errors in the code. None of these necessarily proves that a website works for its customers.
I therefore test complete user journeys:
- whether a form can actually be submitted
- whether a booking process provides clear and useful feedback
- whether language versions work as expected
- whether links and calls to action lead to the promised destination
- whether a technical error creates a genuine problem for the person using the website
I combine automated testing with human evaluation. The purpose is not to produce a long list of inconsequential warnings, but to identify reproducible problems that may cost a business customers, orders, or trust.
Working with Agencies
I also support web and marketing agencies as a white-label partner working under their own brand.
I can extend an agency’s capacity in WordPress development, custom frontend work, design, animation, technical repairs and regular user-journey testing. The agency retains its relationship with the client and determines both the form of the service and its final price.
Communication rules are agreed in advance. I do not contact an agency’s clients or companies featured in its portfolio without its permission.
How I Work
When working directly with a client, I remain the principal contact throughout the project. Technical and design decisions therefore do not become lost between several suppliers.
In an agency partnership, I work within the communication structure established by the agency.
I divide work into clearly defined stages with an agreed scope. Engagements can be project-based, hourly, or structured as ongoing maintenance and monitoring.
Three principles guide my work:
- an issue must be described precisely and reproduced reliably
- the proposed solution must match the real significance of the problem
- the client must understand what is being done, why it is being done and what the result will be
Beyond Websites
Alongside web development, I work in graphic design, painting and literature. I write under the name Jasen Ashwild and publish at exmachina.blog.
These activities are not as separate from development as they may appear. Design, programming and writing are different ways of addressing the same problem: how to make something complex beautiful, understandable and usable.
